Idris Elba does not appear to want to simply be remembered as an actor as this year we’ll get a taste of his abilities behind-the-camera with his directorial debut Yardie, based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Victor Headley.
The story is set in the 1970’s in the UK and focuses on a young Jamaican man named D (Played by Aml Ameen), a man who has has never fully recovered from a childhood incident involving his brother’s murder. Still, in his present he is the protege of a criminal don and music producer (Played by Sheldon Shepherd). In the midst of him reconnecting with his childhood sweetheart (Played by Shantol Jackson) and his now-grown daughter, he soon encounters the man who shot his brother that propels him in a quest for retribution. Along the way, he comes into conflict with a vicious London gangster (Stephen Graham).
The film has no release date yet although the film did premiere at the Sundance Film Festival last month with the film currently holding a disappointing 17% on Rotten Tomatoes after 6 reviews. If you are at least interested in this film, we’ll keep you posted when it gets a release date (Or IF it does given the initial bad reception).
